Celebrating Skills, Community and New Beginnings: Modular Housing Construction Fundamentals Graduation

The Housing Construction Council of Nova Scotia recently celebrated an important milestone as participants in the Modular Housing Construction Fundamentals (MHCF) program marked the completion of their training and the final homes constructed through the initiative.

The graduation brought together participants, HCC staff, partners, community members and special guests to recognize the hard work, growth and achievements of the program’s graduates.

28 Participants Building Skills—and Homes

Through the MHCF program, 28 participants received hands-on training and practical experience in housing construction, developing skills that can support their next steps into Nova Scotia’s residential construction industry.

The 18-week program combines classroom instruction with paid, hands-on work experience, giving participants the opportunity to learn while contributing to real residential construction projects.

Throughout their training, participants developed practical skills across both the structural and finishing phases of construction, including:

  • Framing and drywall

  • Cabinetry and flooring

  • Cladding and trim work

  • Building envelope systems

  • Introductory mechanical concepts

  • Construction math and blueprint reading

  • Building science and site operations

Safety, teamwork, energy efficiency and quality workmanship are also key components of the program.

Participants earn industry-recognized safety certifications, Microcredentials through Cape Breton University and Pre-Apprenticeship hours recognized by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency by helping create pathways into continued training, apprenticeship and careers in the skilled trades.

Six Homes With a Lasting Community Impact

The impact of MHCF extends beyond the training site.

Across the initiative, participants contributed to the construction of six two-bedroom, net-zero-ready modular homes for the West Dalhousie community.

With the final three homes now complete, this graduation represented more than the end of an 18-week training program. It marked the culmination of an initiative that brought workforce development and housing construction together to create a lasting impact.

Participants leave the program with practical experience and new skills, while the homes they helped build will continue to serve the community well beyond graduation day.

Celebrating Our Graduates

Graduation provided an opportunity to recognize how far participants have come! From learning construction fundamentals to applying those skills directly to the construction of real homes.

HCC was also pleased to welcome special guests Chris Palmer, MLA for Kings West, and David Bowlby, MLA for Annapolis, who joined us in celebrating the graduates and this important milestone for the program.

The day was a celebration of the commitment shown by participants throughout their training and of the partners, instructors and community members who helped make the program possible.

To our MHCF graduates: congratulations on this achievement.

The skills, experience and connections developed throughout the program are only the beginning. We look forward to seeing where your next steps take you as you continue building your careers in Nova Scotia’s housing construction industry.

Building People. Building Homes. Building Communities.

Programs like MHCF demonstrate what is possible when workforce development and community needs come together.

By providing practical training, industry credentials and real-world construction experience, HCC continues to support individuals as they build pathways into the skilled trades while helping strengthen the workforce needed to build Nova Scotia’s future.

Congratulations to all 28 participants and thank you to everyone who contributed to making this chapter of the Modular Housing Construction Fundamentals program possible.
