INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT

Passive Design Solutions

Passive Design Solutions (PDS) is a worker-owned architectural design and engineering firm specializing in Passive House and Net Zero residential projects. Founded in 2011 by engineer Natalie Leonard, the firm has grown to a team of nine employees, seven of whom share ownership under an innovative worker-owned model.

PDS was established on the belief that housing should be built and maintained using far fewer resources. Originally a design-build firm, they constructed numerous Passive House projects before shifting focus to architectural design, builder training, and energy modeling. Their deep construction industry roots provide practical, hands-on knowledge that shapes their design approach.

Today, PDS collaborates with clients and builders across North America through their design services, Builder Affiliate program, and Construction Support initiatives. This expansive reach amplifies their impact in addressing climate change and housing insecurity. With over 400 Passive House and Net Zero projects completed, PDS is a recognized leader in high-performance residential building in Canada.

PDS offers a catalogue of more than 60 Net Zero Ready single-family stock plans and custom home designs. Their expertise extends to single-family homes and multi-unit residential developments, serving a diverse clientele that includes private developers, community-based cooperatives, not-for-profit affordable housing organizations, and Provincial government authorities.

Through innovation and collaboration, PDS is shaping the future of sustainable housing, driving meaningful change in the industry.
