Modular Housing Construction Fundamentals

Build Your Future in Construction

The Housing Construction Council is committed to equipping individuals with the essential skills and certifications needed to succeed in the construction industry. Our direct-entry Training Programs provide hands-on experience, safety certifications, and career readiness to ensure workers meet industry standards and employer expectations.

The Modular Housing Construction Fundamentals (Modular Housing Readiness Pilot) program integrates both the structural and finishing phases of home construction into a single, comprehensive training experience. Delivered over 18 weeks, participants move through classroom learning and paid, hands-on work experience while building complete, two-bedroom, net-zero-ready modular homes.

Participants develop foundational skills in framing, building envelope systems, drywall, cladding, cabinetry, trim, flooring, and basic mechanical concepts, alongside construction math, blueprint reading, building science, and site operations. Training emphasizes safety, energy efficiency, teamwork, and quality workmanship, preparing participants to meet real-world industry expectations from start to finish.

Graduates leave with full-time, paid work experience, accredited microcredential badges, pre-apprenticeship hours recognized by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, high school cooperative education credits through Regional Centres for Education, multiple safety certifications, tools and supplies, and individualized job coaching to support long-term employment or apprenticeship pathways in the construction trades.

What You’ll Gain

  • Practical Skills: Gain hands-on experience across the full home-building process - from framing through to interior and exterior finishing - while working on real homes in a supported learning environment.
  • Career Readiness: Build confidence, employability skills, and trade-relevant experience to enter the workforce as a skilled labourer, carpenter’s helper, or pre-apprentice, with paid, insurable hours and ongoing job development support.
  • Community Impact: Contributes directly to addressing Nova Scotia’s housing needs by helping construct net-zero-ready homes that remain in local communities, strengthening both housing supply and workforce capacity.

Earn your Industry Certifications

Participants in our THCFF Program also earn essential safety certifications to enhance their employability and workplace readiness thanks to our training partners. Certifications include:

  • First Aid/CPR Certification – Ensuring participants can respond to medical emergencies on-site.
  • Scaffolding (End Frame) Training – Teaching safe scaffold assembly, usage, and compliance with industry regulations.
  • Ladder Safety and Awareness – Covering best practices for ladder usage and accident prevention.
  • Fall Prevention Certification – Providing knowledge on harness use, fall protection systems, and working at heights.
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) – Educating participants on handling hazardous materials safely.
  • Occupational Health and Safety for New Workers – Introducing key safety protocols and employer expectations in the construction industry.

Graduates will leave with the confidence and experience to launch successful careers in the construction and trades sector.
